Choosing the Right GPS Tracker: OBD, Hardwired, 4G, Motorcycle or Asset
A practical guide to choosing between OBD, hardwired, 4G, motorcycle and asset trackers for your vehicles and equipment.
There is no single best GPS tracker. The right choice depends on the vehicle, the risk of tampering and the data you need.
OBD trackers plug into the diagnostic port and are installed in seconds without wiring, which makes them popular for rental cars and light vehicles. Because they are easy to unplug, they suit lower-risk use cases.
Hardwired trackers connect to power and ignition and can be hidden inside the vehicle. They support relays for engine cut-off, fuel sensors, panic buttons and driver ID readers, making them the standard choice for trucks and higher-value fleets.
Motorcycle trackers are compact, water-resistant and often have backup batteries. Asset trackers use large batteries to monitor trailers, containers and equipment for weeks or months. As older 2G networks are retired in many markets, 4G trackers are the safer long-term choice for new deployments.
